It was the only African American regiment to be raised in Illinois.
Company “F” in particular fought heavily throughout the Eastern theater of the Civil War, with a notable presence at the Battle of Petersburg, and during the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. Afterwards, the regiment was stationed in Texas until their mustering out in November of 1865.
