[CIVIL WAR] Pay Voucher for Private Black Servant, 5th TN Cavalry (US)

Partly printed pay document completed in manuscript. Nashville, TN, 14 June 1865. 17 x 10 7/8 in. Signed by Pickering. Docketed to verso.

 

A pay voucher completed for First Lieutenant William B. Pickering of the 5th Tennessee Cavalry (US) for his Black servant named Nelson Baird from 1 November 1864 to 28 February 1865, totaling $478.75. Pickering enlisted on 19 April 1861 as a private and was mustered into Company C of the 3rd Ohio Infantry. Mustering out after 30 days service on 17 June 1861, he re-enlisted with the same company on the same day. Two years later, he was transferred to the 5th Tennessee Cavalry and was promoted to first lieutenant and adjutant of the regiment. He mustered out with the regiment on 14 August 1865 at Nashville, TN.
