Sick Book of Company "I" 104th Regt. United States Colored Troops. [South Carolina?], 1 November 1865 - 14 February 1866. Manuscript ledger. 19 pages, oblong 8vo, 8 1/8 x 6 3/8 in. Original paper wraps.
A very rare manuscript book recording the medical care of Company I of the 104th United States Colored Troops (USCT).
The regiment was organized at the end of the war, beginning on 28 April 1865, through the summer, at Beaufort, South Carolina. They were on garrison and guard duty throughout South Carolina until they were mustered out in February 1866. This book closely tracks their enlistment, with the first records entered in November 1865 and running until they were mustered out with the final page reading, in red ink, "Paid and Disbanded the 14th Day of February 1866." Each page records 13 soldiers with their rank and "remarks", typically listing their various ailments.
A rare and unusual manuscript relic of a USCT regiment.
