The first major battles of the Civil War were fought along the Tennessee River, and the waterway remained vital throughout the conflict. After the Union captured Fort Henry in 1862, the river was opened to Federal gunboats, and the Union victory at Shiloh, fought on its banks, helped secure control of western Tennessee. From this strategic corridor, Union forces could move troops and supplies up and down the river to the sites of pivotal campaigns that contributed materially to ultimate victory.
