Two (2) albumen CDVs depicting the landscape at the base of Lookout Mountain. N.p., n.d. [circa 1863–1864]. One with a five-cent stamp affixed to the verso of the mount; the second with penciled inscription to verso: “Lookout Mountain / from Fort Sherman.”

The more developed cityscape view likely depicts Chattanooga, Tennessee, as suggested by the visible military encampments. During the Chattanooga Campaign of 1863–1864, Federal camps housing the Army of the Cumberland nearly engulfed the city, and the conical Sibley tents and A-frame shelters that punctuate the composition strongly support that identification. The foreground of the second image, though more pastoral at first glance, is dramatically divided by substantial timber fieldworks erected to protect the city against advancing artillery and small-arms fire. In both photographs, Lookout Mountain rises majestically in the background, lending the scenes both topographical grandeur and unmistakable wartime significance.
