M1860 light cavalry saber. [For]estdale, [RI]: [Mansfield & Lamb], 186[?]. Ricasso with worn Mansfield & Lamb oval mark, "Forestdale" partially legible. Ricasso reverse stamped "U[S] / J[?] / 186[?]". Pommel cap marked "J. M.". Blade 34 3/4 in. Overall 42 1/4 in. long.
Complete in scabbard. The blade is overall clean, with a darker patina towards the guard. No leather washer is present. The grip retains its original leather and wire wrap. 1 suspension loop is missing from the scabbard.
One of 10000 that the Mansfield & Lamb scythe-shop turned sword manufacturer was contracted to produce. Widely used during the Civil War, the m1860 saber was considered a lighter, more maneuverable weapon than its predecessor, the m1840 “Wristbreaker.”
