The cover sheet includes a Major & Knapp chromolithograph of a camp scene: A trio of officers accept a communique from a courier while a musician, seated on a drum, looks on.
The 13th Regiment, New York State National Guard, to which the piece is dedicated, was not a particularly well-fought regiment and saw action at none of the War's major battles. The 13th was nevertheless held in high esteem by the public, with accounts of crowds forming on multiple occasions to celebrate the regiment or see them off. Significant contributions by the guardsmen include participation in the reconstruction of the railroad from Annapolis to the Naval Academy and in the quelling of the 1863 New York City Draft Riots.
