The Lilliputian Card Party. Full-length albumen CDV studio portrait. New York: E& H.T. Anthony, [1863]. Title and copyright information to recto, Brady/Anthony imprints to verso. SIGNED BY ALL FOUR SUBJECTS TO VERSO: "Compliments of Charles S Stratton / Compliments of Lavinia Warren Stratton / G.W. M Nutt / Minnie Warren."
A signed group portrait of the famed performers with dwarfism, Washington Morris Nutt (1848-1881), known as Commodore Nutt; Charles S. Stratton (1838-1883), known as General Tom Thumb; Lavinia Warren (1841-1919); and Minnie Warren (1849-1878). Sitting among variously sized studio furniture, intended to emphasize their statures, the group is captured playing cards. All four individuals became celebrities in their own right, each starting in performances with American showman P.T. Barnum (1810-1891) as his featured "human curiosities." Their lives would be heavily showcased, resulting in the marriage of Charles S. Stratton to fellow performer Lavinia Warren in 1863, making it a major celebrity event.
Many images of the performers were captured, taken to accentuate their physical appearances and captivate audiences worldwide.
Notably, this view is signed by each of the four subjects.
