Berger was the son of noted saxophonist Esther "Etta" Morgan and Fred G. Berger, Sr. (1852-1920), who was a member, along with his siblings, of the Berger Family of performing musicians that toured during the 1860s, including under the moniker the "Berger Family of Swiss Bell Ringers."
