A finely detailed design study of a dining room interior, showing the table laid with silver, a porcelain dinner service, a soup tureen, and a pair of candelabra. Particular attention paid to the moulding and window treatments.
The consignor relates that this was discovered in a secret room in the North Carolina residence of Athelia (alt. Athalia) “Thalia” Falk (1911-2009). Born in Chicago in 1911, Falk would leave the home of her widowed mother, Emilia, c. 1936-1937. She would settle in Manhattan, New York, between 1940 and 1943, working independently in the fashion district; this is presumably where she acquired her artwork.
There is some wear to the righthand side of the image, which is postulated to have been caused by rodent activity while the piece was being stored in the secret room.
