.44 caliber. 2.6975" wedge retained octagon to round barrel. NSN. Oxidized metal, German silver mountings, checkered walnut bird's head stock. Single shot percussion muzzleloading pocket pistol with a notch rear sight, a German silver blade front sight and no provisions for a ramrod. Back action percussion lock is unmarked, but lightly engraved with foliate themes. Top of breech is stamped "FH CLARK / MEMPHIS", although the markings are somewhat weak. No other markings are present. Breech plug tang, breech and triggerguard are also engraved with simple foliate patterns. In a feature often encountered on Clark made derringers, there is a small, German silver cap pinned to the tip of the forend. 

The firm of FH Clark operated in Memphis, TN circa 1847-1866 and was a jeweler and fancy good retailer, who also sold firearms and potentially "produced" firearms as well, although it appears that many of the guns they they "made" were likely made by other southern makers, like Franz Bitterlich in Nashville, and were simply retailer marked by Clark. Clark also sold real Henry Deringer made derringer pistols with his retailer mark, as well as other guns made by smaller southern makers that were unmarked other than with Clark's retailer mark. Among derringer collectors, a gun like this one is often referred to as a "Clark Clark", since it appears to be consistent with the guns the firm "made", rather than a gun by another indentifiable maker that was simply retailer marked by Clark. About good. Bore fair to good, heavily oxidized and pitted with good rifling present. Metal moderately oxidized with scattered pitting and oxidized discoloration on all of the metal and with the a dull silvery patina on the German silver mounts. Markings and engravings remain partly visible. Lock is mechanically functional. Wood with moderate wear and lightly sanded with decent checking remaining. Wood with some minor chipped loss along the upper edge of the lock mortise, a small tight grain crack in the belly of the stock's forend and with scattered bumps, dings and mars.
