.40 caliber. 3" wedge retained octagon to round barrel. NSN. Oxidized metal, German silver mountings, walnut stock with checkered bird's head grip. Single shot percussion muzzleloading pistol with notch rear sight, dovetailed German silver front sight blade and no provision for ramrod in stock. Unmarked back action percussion lock is lightly engraved with flowing foliate scrolls, with the breech and breech plug tang engraved ensuite. Lightly engraved German silver mountings with pineapple finial on trigger plate. Triggerguard may actually be silver, rather than German silver but shows no hallmarks. Top plate of barrel is clearly stamped "TRUMPLER & DAY."

Little is known of Trumpler & Day, although Sellers only lists them as working together in Little Rock, AR circa 1860. He records a Jacob F Trumpler working as a gunsmith in Little Rock circa 1855-1885 when he died, and in the post Civil War period Trumpler worked as Trumpler & Dabbs circa 1868-1874. Trumpler & Day marked derringer pattern pistols are extremely rare, and are considered a real centerpiece in any advanced collection of southern derringers. {ANTIQUE}

Good. Bore moderately oxidized with some pitting and strong rifling. Metal moderately oxidized with no finish, scattered surface discoloration and some surface roughness and light pitting. Markings and engravings remain mostly clear and legible. Lock needs mechanical attention as trigger will not release the hammer at full cock, necessitating the removal of the lock to lower the hammer. Hammer may be replaced. Wood with moderate wear, possibly lightly sanded, showing smoothing to the checkering. A couple of small cracks are present around the lock screw escutcheon. Otherwise the wood shows scattered bumps, dings and mars.
