A grouping of two (2) images featuring African Americans in occupational positions. Views include:
1.) Full-length outdoor albumen cabinet card. Chicago, Illinois: Covell-Nash Photo Co, n.d. Publishers imprint printed to mount recto.
An excellent image of three young men, suavely posed in front of a barbershop. To the left of the photograph is a young African American man, dressed in trousers, a button up shirt, and a brown vest. He grins at the camera with his arms resting to his side. Beside him sits a chair on a pedestal, likely a seat for a haircut-inclined customer. Beside him stands another young man, dressed similarly, with a white vest and his hand neatly tucked into his trouser pocket. Balanced between two striped barber’s pillars stands a rather suave gentleman, leaned against one side with his arm fashionably posed upon his hip. He wears a handsome white coat. A shadowy mustache crests his upper lip.
An exceptional photograph of three debonair young men, posed outside of an iconically designed barbershop.
2.) Full-length studio albumen stereoview. Littleton, New Hampshire: B.W. Kilburn, 1897. Publisher’s copyright printed to mount recto. Publisher’s imprint printed to mount verso. Series identification and title printed to mount recto reads: “11498, Good story Boss, but I can’t vote your ticket.”
An entertaining posed view of three men, narrated by the corresponding publisher’s caption which reads “Good story Boss, but I can’t vote your ticket.” Three men stand around a bench, dressed in fine suits and tophats, clearly discussing matters in a jovial way. The African American man to the left of the photograph is bent at the knees with his arms thrown down, as if bellowing out a laugh. The man in the middle directs his gaze to the man on the right side view, with his leg propped on the bench. He seems to also be responding to a funny sentiment being shared. The man to the right side view smiles along, with his arm extended, grasping a ticket, assumedly the topic of conversation as described by the publisher’s imprint.
