A grouping of four (4) double-sided and one (1) single-sided albumen views of African Americans and landscapes of St. Augustine to cut-out card mounts. Views include:

1. Full-view albumen 3 1/4 x 3 inches. [St. Augustine, Florida. 1875-1878.] Views to recto and to verso.

A charming view of four (4) African American children. A small toddler sits upright in a pram, wearing a white dress while another child dressed similarly pushes it, looking back towards the camera. Dressed in a white outfit with a smart cap upon his head, a young boy  stands to the right, resting his hand upon the pram with his hand jauntily positioned to his hip. The last child peeks out from behind the young boy’s arm, staring directly at the photographer’s lens.

An image of a large tree with spanning limbs, draped in Spanish moss. Smaller tropical trees are littered around its roots, seemingly basking in the ample shade provided by the oak’s enveloping limbs. An excellent nature view from St. Augustine, Florida.

2. Full-view albumen 3 1/4 x 3 1/4 inches. [St. Augustine, Florida. 1875-1878.] Views to recto and to verso.

Four African American children stand in view of the photographer’s lens, posed in front of a large four-wheeled wagon pulled by a mule. The children are all dressed elegantly in dresses, pants and buttoned shirts, with caps adorning the heads of a few. Behind them is the landscape of residences–fences and roofs filling the otherwise flat background.

A blurred view of tropical trees, hanging over a reflective pool of water. Their images bounce back on each other, creating an abstract illusion with its unfocused capture. An intriguing natural landscape view.

3. Full-view albumen 3 1/8 x 3 1/8 inches. [St. Augustine, Florida. 1875-1878.] Views to recto and to verso.

An elegantly posed full-view portrait of three African American ladies, standing in front of a natural landscape of trees and fences. To the front is situated a small child, dressed in a crisp white frock, sucking on her thumb. Likely stood behind her is an older sister, dressed in a dark gown with a matching hat, dipped stylishly in front of her face, shading it from view. To the right side view of both subjects stands perhaps their mother, dressed beautifully in a long dark skirt and laced collared white shirt. Her hair is neatly fashioned away from her face.

An intriguing image of a natural landscape, with a broken wheel leaning up against the trees. A juxtaposition of the natural and the man-made.

4. Full-view albumen 2 3/4 x 3 inches. [St. Augustine, Florida. 1875-1878.] Views to recto and to verso.

A charming domestic view of two African American women, captured while sitting on a front porch. Dressed in a striped gown with an elegant head wrapping, an African American woman inspects the head of an African American child, while she leans against her lap. The child is bent onto the woman’s lap, with her arm positioned elegantly in front. She is dressed in a simple checked gown.

TO REVERSE

An incredible natural view of Florida, with an alligator sunning itself on a log surrounded by tropical plants and trees. Behind it is a body of water where a steamboat can be seen chugging through the water, smoke billowing out of its chimney.

5. Full-view albumen 4 1/2 x 3 1/3 inches. [St. Augustine, Florida. 1875-1878.]

Two charming African American children are standing in front of five large palm trees, with carriage wheels peeking out from the right side view of the photograph. A young boy sits on the ground, dressed in trousers and a white buttoned shirt with a cap resting upon his head. His feet are crossed in front of him. To his side stands a young girl with her arm resting on his shoulder, dressed in a lovely white frock. She seems to be balancing on one foot, capturing the natural restlessness of children posing for a photograph.

An extensive group of photographs showing historic architecture, flora, and five (5) captivating images featuring Black subjects - both posed portraits and candid views.

A fine collection of photographs capturing 1870s St. Augustine.
