Full-length albumen studio portrait. Great Barrington, Massachusetts: E. H. Clark, ca 1860s. Photographer's imprint to mount verso.

A commanding, full-length studio portrait that depicts a dignified African American woman standing beside a classical fluted architectural column. She is attired in an expansive, hoop-skirted horizontal-striped silk dress paired with a dark patterned floral shawl, striped neck ribbon, and a large white flared fabric bonnet framing her face. She holds a folded fan or other accessory in her right hand against her dress. Her attire represents considerable investment and parlor fashion of the 1860s, reflecting personal autonomy and socioeconomic standing within New England's free Black community.

Cartes de visite featuring well-to-do African American sitters produced in western Massachusetts and the Berkshires during the Civil War-era are exceptionally rare. This portrait stands as an extraordinary visual document of 19th-century Black dignity, style, and community presence in New England. A fantastic early African American portrait.
