Sixth plate seated studio portrait daguerreotype. N.p.: n.p., ca early-to-mid 1850s. Early stamped brass bevel mat with a delicate rope-twist inner border, enclosed within the bottom well of a separated full leatherette case. 

The deeply moving studio portrait depicts a young Black woman seated with an infant nestled against her lap. The woman looks directly into the lens with an arresting, dignified, and contemplative expression. She is dressed in a light-colored fitted bodice with a contrasting neck ribbon, wearing a striped headwrap over her hair. Her arm wraps gently around the fair-complexioned toddler, who is attired in a white frock and gazes softly toward the operator.

Antebellum photographic portraits documenting Black women caring for white children represent some of the most critical, complex, and intensely sought-after visual artifacts of nineteenth-century American history. While commissioned by wealthy white families to celebrate a family's lineage and household status, these rare survivors provide indispensable, indelible portraits of Black women navigating the profound intimacies and oppressive structures of antebellum domestic life. The subject's direct, unblinking confrontation with the lens elevates this example far beyond a passive background figure, asserting her profound humanity, presence, and agency across nearly two centuries.

Very good condition. The plate retains exceptional sharpness and rich tonal gradations. A dark ring of perimeter tarnish frames the oval aperture, with light scattered dust under the early glass and no apparent wipes or damage to the central image area. Housed in the original bottom tray of a leatherette case.
