A contemplative view of the fierce abolitionist and Radical Republican politician, depicted cradling his chin in his hand in a thoughtful pose. A prominent leader of the abolitionist movement, Stevens used his position representing Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives to fiercely advocate and defend the rights of Black Americans. After Emancipation, he was deeply involved in the passage of the Reconstruction Acts, as well as the impeachment effort of President Andrew Johnson in part due to Johnson's failure to uphold these acts.
