Vignetted half-length albumen CDV studio portrait of Thaddeus Stevens. Washington, D.C.: Alexander Gardner (photographer), Philip & Solomons (publisher). Illustrated imprint to verso, along with modern pencil inscription: "10/20/78 / Bighorn on way to Alberta"
A contemplative view of the fierce abolitionist and Radical Republican politician, depicted cradling his chin in his hand in a thoughtful pose. Stevens was a prominent leader of the abolitionist movement, using his position representing Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives to fiercely advocate and defend the rights of Black Americans. After emancipation, he was deeply involved in the passage of the Reconstruction Acts, as well as the impeachment effort of President Andrew Johnson, in part due to his failure to uphold these acts.
