Thaddeus Stevens was a prominent leader of the abolitionist movement, he used his position representing Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives to fiercely advocate and defend the rights of Black Americans. After Emancipation, he was deeply involved in the passage of the Reconstruction Acts, as well as the impeachment effort of President Andrew Johnson in party due to his failure to uphold these acts.
