George Fiske (1835-1918), photographer. [Stagecoach]. Outdoor view. Albumen boudoir card. Yosemite Valley, California: George Fiske, ca. 1880s–1890s.
Artist's signature ("FISKE") in negative to lower right. Photographer's imprint stamped to mount verso. Pencil inscription to mount verso reads "Y. S. & T. Co.'s Coach going down / the grade into Yosemite Valley."
The dramatic composition captures a Yosemite Stage & Turnpike Company coach kicking up dust as a team of six horses barrels down a steep, rocky dirt grade cut into the mountainside. An unforgettable split-second window into the American West, the driver and passengers are visible atop the open stagecoach against towering Sierra conifers and rugged boulder slopes.
The artist, George Fiske (1835-1918), trained under Carleton Watkins (1829-1916) and Thomas Houseworth (1828-1915) in San Francisco before permanently settling in Yosemite Valley in 1879, becoming the first photographer to live year-round in the park. While celebrated for his sweeping landscapes and winter vistas, Fiske's action-filled documentary views of stagecoaches navigating treacherous mountain grades are among his most dynamic and desirable western works.

Very good to fine condition. The albumen print displays spectacular tonal depth, excellent contrast, and sharp detail throughout. The heavy gray card mount remains clean, rigid, and flat with sharp edges and a crisp verso stamp.
