GALEN CLARK WITH "GRIZZLY GIANT" SEQUOIA, PORTRAIT BY FISKE
George Fiske (1835-1918), photographer. Grizzly Giant. Dia 33. ft. Mariposa Grove. Outdoor full-length portrait of Galen Clark. Albumen, 10 1/3 x 7 inches. California: George Fiske, [1884].
Mounted to an original heavy cream album leaf with cloth binding tab. Photographer's signature in negative to lower right. Period ink manuscript title to mount recto. Pencil identification to mount recto reads "Galen Clark." From Fiske's published album Photographs of Yosemite Valley and Big Trees of Mariposa County, Calif. California: George Fiske, 1884.
The striking composition depicts legendary frontiersman, naturalist, and the first official Guardian of Yosemite, Galen Clark (1814–1910), standing dwarfed before the colossal, gnarled base of the "Grizzly Giant" in Mariposa Big Tree Grove. Holding his hat at his side, the bearded pioneer provides an immediate human sense of scale against the immense 33-foot-diameter trunk, deeply furrowed bark, and weathered root burl of the giant sequoia.
Galen Clark is credited as the first Euro-American to explore and document the Mariposa Grove in 1857, later playing a pivotal role in advocating for the Yosemite Grant signed by President Lincoln in 1864. This portrait, captured by Clark's close friend and fellow Yosemite pioneer George Fisk (1835-1918), stands as one of the definitive photographic icons of 19th-century American conservation and the early environmental movement.

Very good to fine condition. The albumen print exhibits rich, deep tone and contrast, along with stunning clarity. The sturdy album card mount remains rigid and flat with light age toning, a cloth binding hinge at the left margin, and clean margins.
