A highly personalized Vest Pocket Autographic Kodak owned by Meade D. Detweiler that he used to document his service during World War I. Detweiler volunteered as a member of Section 1 of the American Red Cross Ambulance Service on duty in Italy. Notably, Detweiler was a close friend of Ernest Hemingway who served in Section 4. A picture of Detweiler and Hemingway together is illustrated on p. 140 of Dear Bert: An American Pilot Flying World War I Italy by Edward Davis Lewis (2002), a copy of which is included here.
By 1912, Kodak had developed and marketed a small, pocket-sized camera. In 1915, they added the "autographic" feature and sold it as "The Soldier's Camera." Accordingly, thousands went to the European front during World War I, resulting in the many excellent personal photographs and albums still extant.
