Outdoor group portrait of Troop K, 9th U.S. Cavalry. Chadron, Nebraska: Journal Print, [November 1890]. Photographer's imprint and advertisement printed in blue to mount verso.
A rare image of Troop K of the Ninth United States Cavalry, one of the famed all-Black regiments known as the "Buffalo Soldiers" formed after the Civil War.
The image was taken in November 1890, during the rising tensions known as the Ghost Dance War (or Pine Ridge Campaign) and shortly before the Massacre at Wounded Knee. The Troop is assembled at Pine Ridge Agency in front of Sibley wall tents assembled among the hills. In another view of the troop, a soldier holds the flag so their regiment and troop designations can be seen in the whipping wind (c.f. Nebraska Historical Society, NSHS RG1517-93-15).
The 9th Cavalry was patrolling the area during conflict and they were the last regiment to leave the Pine Ridge Reservation in the winter of 1890-1891 after the tragic massacre.
A very fine image of a complete Buffalo Soldier cavalry troop taken at a pivotal time in the Western frontier.
