SIGNATURES OF FIVE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN ON LIMITED EDITION PRINT

Jay Ashurst, aritst. Leaving a Legacy - Forging a Future. Limited edition offset lithograph. Signed by Ashurst to lower right margin. Numbered 288 of 600. Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama: Air War College, 1999. Visible 26 1/4 x 18 1/4 in., handsomely matted and framed to 38 1/4 x 30 1/8 in.

BOLDLY SIGNED BY FIVE TUSKEGEE AIRMEN TO LOWER MARGIN. Each pilot signed their name followed by their class designation from the Tuskegee Advance Flying School. Signatures, from left to right:

!. Herbert E. Carter (1919-2012) flew 77 combat missions in North African, Sicilian, and European Campaigns. In 2004, he received the French Legion of Honor. He continued to serve in the US Air Force until he retired as  Lt. Colonel in 1969.

2. Charles "Chuck" Walter Dryden (1920-2008) graduated in the 2nd class from the Tuskegee Advance Flying School (TAFS) and was one of six pilots who engaged enemy fighters over Pantelleria, Sicily, marking the first time in aviation history that Black American pilots of the U.S. Army Air Corps engaged aircraft in combat.

3. Sherman T. Rose (1919-2008) graduated from the very first class of students from TAFS. He remained at Tuskegee as a flight instructor, training the famed 99th Pursuit Squadron and the 332nd Fighter Group.

4. Carrol S. Woods (1919-2007) flew over 107 combat missions as a part of the 99th Fighter Squadron in Italy. His plane was shot down over Greece, and he was taken as a prisoner of war (POW) for seven months before he was released at the end of the war on 28 April 1945.

5. James C. Warren (1923-2014) trained as a Tuskegee Airman in Class 44-C but received his assignment to the 477th Bomb Group in 1945. He continued to serve through the Korean and Vietnam Wars, however, and ultimately flew 173 combat missions.

The print, after a painting by Jay Ashurst, shows three blue-and-yellow biplanes piloted by Tuskegee Airmen in a training exercise over Moton Field, Alabama in 1942.
