7.92x57mm. 21" barrel. SN: 6853. Phosphate metal finish with blued bolt in hardwood semi-pistol grip stock with factory bare wood butt and fixed front blade and rear notch sights. Bolt action internal magazine fed repeating rifle charged with stripper clips produced as a low-cost substitute standard rifle in 1945. Receiver is marked bnz 45, indicating it was made by Steyr in 1945. No model marking on receiver. Left barrel shows a {WWII Eagle/Swastika} view mark followed by the serial number, and a Steyr {bnz shield} barrel production mark. All metal components show a correct factory rough appearance with no serial number marks on the bolt. Wrist is stamped MR and X2. Comes with a period leather sling. 

Manufactured especially for the Volkssturm, the VK-98 rifle, also known as the Volksgewehr or VG-5, was a simplified and relatively crude last-ditch rifle manufactured in 1945. They were produced not for the German Army, but for the myriad personnel that made up the Volkssturm, which was formally established in September of 1944, and revealed to the public in October. Made up of a motley mixture of factory workers formerly listed as essential, soldiers recovering from wounds, children, the elderly, and veterans of World War I, the Volkssturm's capacity to fight was dubious at best, with few units possessing the training or fitness to carry on fighting during the final months of the war. A scarce remnant of the final days of Nazi Germany in unusually good condition. {C&R}

Very Good to Fine. Bore has some grease residues that should clean to Very Bright with sharp rifling throughout. Metal finish with some grease overall, streaks, and abrasions to barrel, and cycling wear on bolt. Some gray flecking to bolt handle. The stock shows some scattered light handling dents but retains the factory rough finish. Sling shows cracking and abrasions overall.
