Halsey, and Rear Admiral Forrest Sherman standing behind him, together with a large contingent of sailors and naval officers. The image captures a moment of immense historical consequence, bringing together four of the most important American commanders of the Pacific Theater at the formal close of the Second World War.
Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Ocean Areas, here signs the Japanese Instrument of Surrender after the Japanese delegation had affixed their signatures. Beautifully framed, the image was captured by photojournalist Arthur Rickerby (1921–1972).
