A grouping pertaining to Mexican American War veteran and politician, Joseph Lane (1801-1881).

During the Mexican-American War, Joseph Lane commanded a brigade under General Zachary Taylor at Buena Vista, which later earned him a brevet major generalship for his gallantry in battle, emerging as a hero of the war. He was commissioned as governor for the newly organized Oregon Territory in 1848, acting as superintendent of Native American affairs. Within this role, he prepared one of the most complete reports on Native Americans of the region he oversaw, presenting it to Congress. His political career continued, becoming a territorial delegate to the U.S Congress from 1851-1859 and then finally serving as one of Oregon's first US Senators in 1859, which he remained in position of until 1861. Entering into the Civil War, he became known for his pro-recessionist position.

This grouping contains:

Joseph Lane Quarter plate three-quarter length studio portrait ambrotype. N.p, n.d. Full leatherette case with floral motif and gilded edges.
