An oil painting in a distinct Western Pulp style, featuring the close-up view of a drawn cowboy's hand, grasping a revolver as it is being actively drawn from the cowboy's holster. In view opposite of the hand is another cowboy, dressed in traditional wear, with two hands grasping his revolvers at the ready. Capturing the intensity of the moment before a classic cowboy fast draw, this Pulp painting perfectly represents the Western genre, and imagery that would have been seen across widely circulated magazine and novel covers.
A. Leslie Ross (1910-1989) was an American Pulp artist who developed a popular primary focus on the Western genre. After studying at the New York School of Fine Art and the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, Ross began his freelancing career. Frequently contributing to various western magazine, he soon began painting cover illustrations for Pulp magazines, such as All Sports, Blue Ribbon Western, Complete Cowboy Novel, Complete Northwest, Crack Detective, Western Aces, and Wild West Weekly etc. His freelancing career would also include working for major studios such as Warner Brothers, Columbia Pictures, and Paramount Studio. While he would continue his successful freelancing career throughout his life, Ross would also open up his own art school in 1960 at his home, as well as teach night art classes at his local high school.
