A collection of two (2) drawings by Edward Percy Moran, with two (2) additional crossed out drawings on the versos of both. Moran (1862-1935) trained as an artist under his father, Edward Moran, in addition to others when he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and National Academy of Design in New York City. He primarily painted American historical subjects, including scenes not unlike these two sketches.

This first sketch is of Dolley Madison, the first lady when James Madison was president, saving a portrait of George Washington. This occurred during the War of 1812; a British force attacked Washington, D.C., in 1814, burning the city. While Madison and the White House's servants were preparing to flee, she ordered her personal servant, Paul Jennings, to save the Stuart portrait of George Washington, which was a copy of the Lansdowne portrait.

The second sketch features the Marquis de Lafayette with George Washington on the former's grand tour of the U.S. following the Revolutionary War. Lafayette and Washington happened to be in Annapolis in 1784 at the same, where they were greeted with celebrations and balls following their victorious campaign together in the war.

This lot includes:

1. "The Heroism of Dolly Madison. Saving the State Papers and the Portrait of Washington, Prior to the Burning of the Capitol. War of 1812." Pencil on cardstock. Approx. 14 7/8 x 19 3/4 in. Note to recto reads, "Page 186, Romantic Days." Crossed out on verso is a sketch called "Founders of the Nation," featuring portrayals of Osgood, Hamilton, Randolph, Washington, Knox and Jefferson.

2. "Lafayette Savior to Washington at Annapolis 1784." Pencil on cardstock. Approx. 11 1/8 x 9 5/8 in. Notes to recto read "Page 180 Life of Lafayette" and "Painted 1919." Crossed out on verso is a sketch of a woman on a swing with a man kneeling beside her.
