Nathan Strong. A Discourse, Delivered on Friday, December 27, 1799, The Day Set Apart by the Citizens of Hartford, to Lament Before God, the Death of Gen. George Washington; who Died Dec. 14, 1799.  Hartford, Connecticut: Hudson and Goodwin, 1800.

8vo. Original wrappers, with preceding half-title. FIRST EDITION. Evans 38577; Sabin 92954; Stillwell 227 & 228.

Inscribed on the half-title: “Joel West’s presented by the publishers 1800 – No. 79.”

An important sermon delivered on a day of national lament in remembrance of President and General George Washington. The eulogy was preached by Nathan Strong (1748–1816), a veteran of the Revolutionary War who served as pastor of the First Church of Hartford from his ordination in 1773 until his death. Strong was also the chief organizer of the Connecticut Missionary Society and founder and editor of the Connecticut Evangelical Magazine.

This copy is further distinguished by a contemporary presentation inscription to Joel West — possibly Rev. Joel West, who appears in the 1800 Federal Census for Chatham, Middlesex County, Connecticut.

[Pamphlets, Publications, Ephemera, Books, Rare Books, Tracts] [American Revolutionary War, American Revolution, Founding Fathers, Declaration of Independence, Colonial America, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, James Monroe]
