MOST COMPLETE EDITION OF JAY'S TREATY CEDING THE NORTHWEST TERRITORY TO THE UNITED STATES
The first edition of the ratified Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation to also include documents concerning the Treaty's tortured ratification process, such as speeches and reports from members of Congress, resolutions by various local governments, and newspaper articles. Also included is the text of the U.S. Constitution, two 1778 treaties with France, the 1783 treaty with Great Britain that ended the Revolution, and, notably, Noah Webster's Vindication.
The treaty aimed to settle several outstanding issues left unresolved at the 1783 Treaty of Paris, especially the withdrawal of British troops from forts in the Northwest Territory, as well as a variety of trade disputes. The treaty was unpopular and relied on Washington's immense influence to secure ratification in Congress. In retrospect, however, it is considered one of the greatest diplomatic successes of the early Federal era.
