THE FINEST AMERICAN BASKET-HILTED EAGLE-HEAD SWORD IN PRIVATE HANDS
A museum-quality piece that stands at the intersection of art and military culture. The sword's lavish gold gilding and hand-engraved motifs represent a Federalist masterwork of national symbolism.
Ornate high-end Federalist gold sword. Ca. 1810-1830. Made for a general or general officer.
An approx. 38 3/4 in. sword with a slightly curved, single-edged 32 in. blade. The extremely wide, white-etched blade is finely detailed with several American eagles, some with federal shields, military motifs, geometric work and floral designs. The blade retains 98% of its original "frosted" finish.
The pommel is an American eagle with an open beak and a full gold-gilded back strap. The basket guard is decorated with high relief floral designs to create the large basket hilt. The bone handle, which is beautifully engraved with geometric designs, has a unique gold-gilded brass top engraved with eagle feathers to match the pommel.
The sword's wide, gold-gilded scabbard is also profusely engraved with floral motifs, American eagles, and even a curved American eagle's neck with head (a very unusual motif).
While we have seen thousands of eagle-head swords, none compare to this basket-hilted eagle. A great rarity that deserves an eminent home.
