FEDERALIST ERA TO WAR OF 1812 AMERICAN NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICER’S SWORD
Stirrup-hilted saber with pillow pommel. N.p., ca. 1790. Guard stamped and scabbard throat etched with bench number "MI 1579". Blade 29 5/8 in., overall 35 1/8 in. long.
Provenance: Frederick "Frank" Logan Collection
Though it predates the standardization of United States-issued edged weapons, this sword is an exemplary specimen of those produced for non-commissioned officers of the Federalist Era.
Complete in leather scabbard with some wear as shown and a replacement chape. The blade exhibits an overall dark patina with some pitting. The brass guard has taken on a mellow patina. There is an apparent solder repair where the knucklebow terminates. Black paint has been applied to the wooden grip as well as the aforementioned solder repair.
From the collection of Frederick "Frank" Logan. Frank Logan was a dedicated Civil War enthusiast and respected member of the collecting community. He began his lifelong passion for Civil War history as a relic hunter in the mid-1970s. Over the decades, that early interest grew into a deep passion for all aspects of the Civil War, with his collecting efforts eventually centering on Maryland-related artifacts and material culture.
A member of the Maryland Arms Collectors Association, he was well regarded among fellow collectors for his knowledge and appreciation of historical artifacts. Carefully assembled over many years, his collection reflects decades of searching, study, and a genuine dedication to preserving pieces of American Civil War history.
