A vibrant, surreal painting featuring a young boy emerging from swirling, colorful abstract waves. The work contrasts innocence with violence, capturing the boy’s contemplative expression alongside a clenched fist and the dark, looming presence of a bomb overhead.
Marcos Pavón Estrada (Cuban, b. 1938) was a painter who overcame the loss of use of his hands due to polio by mastering mouth-painting from an early age. After receiving formal artistic training in Havana and graduating from the Fine Arts School in Holguín in 1969, he developed a unique style rich in rural mythology, portraying witches, elves, and figures drawn from local folklore. A member of the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists, Pavón created his own easel device to support his work and became known for celebrating Cuban folk traditions and imagination through his evocative compositions.
