A striking portrait of a Cuban man in a beret smoking a cigarette "down to the last 'drop.'" Framed by a distant mountain range and lush foliage, his portrait dominates the work. Nearly monochromatic in hues of green, his form is defined by a red cap and sky-blue shirt.
Joherms Quiala Brooks was born in 1970 in Guantanamo, Cuba. He is known to be an avid fan of Salvador Dalí's work, incorporating surrealist techniques and motifs into his work. However, one writer stated that he combines classical and modern elements in one painting — for example, "his women... appear in classical poses but within a weightlessness that does not suggest a location or situation in time" (Estrada Guantanamo 2000).
