An important image of Carleton Watkins' wagon, published as the frontispiece to the seminal catalogue of Watkins' work, Carleton Watkins: The Art of Perception, published on the occasion of the exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (28 May-7 September 1999) and traveled to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (11 October 1999-9 January 2000) and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (6 February-30 April 2000).
The remarkable view of Echo Canyon shows Watkins' photographic wagon parked along the roadside in the shadow of a large rock formation. The rail lines, running parallel to the dirt road, extend on to the horizon.
In 1873, Carleton Watkins traveled to Utah to document the transcontinental railroad routes, including the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific lines. His views are prized for their artistry and dramatic composition. This view is particularly unique, offering the viewer a small glimpse behind the lens at the itinerant life of the pioneering landscape photographer.
An exceptional Watkins print to grace even advanced collections.
