A grouping of five (5) stereoviews from around Galveston, Texas, ca. 1870-99. All are on yellow mounts, include a period pencil inscription identifying what is in the image and include the imprint of Philip H. Rose (1848-1926). Originally born in Cincinnati, Rose was in Galveston by 1870, where he lived for around 30 years before living the rest of his life in Providence, Rhode Island. He was involved in several partnerships while working in Galveston, with names such as Blessing, Schmedling and Zahn.

The views included in this lot are as follows:

1. Tremont Hotel. A view of the Tremont House, a historic hotel that originally opened in 1839. This building, however, was the hotel's second iteration — the first was destroyed by a fire in 1865 while Galveston was occupied by Confederate soldiers. It reopened in 1872 and housed six U.S. presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant. This version would close in 1928 after deteriorating from the 1900 Galveston hurricane, only to reopen on a new lot 60 years later.

2. Beach Hotel. This ornate staircase leading to a grand facade belonged to the Beach Hotel, a seasonal resort that opened in 1883. Its life was short lived, however, because it was destroyed by a mysterious 25-minute fire in 1898. This fire came after the hotel was caught flushing its cesspools via pipe into the Gulf of Mexico and subsequently closed until it connected to the city's sewage system.

3. Harmony Hall. A look at Harmony Hall, built by renowned Victorian architect Nicholas Clayton. It opened in 1883 as a social forum for Galveston's Jewish community — notice the Star of David in the top window — but did not gain traction. The building was eventually sold and became the Galveston Business University, then suffered damage from the 1900 hurricane. It was repaired and used as the Scottish Rite Temple until it was destroyed by a fire in 1928.

4. Shipping / "Mosquito Fleet." Small boats crowd a wharf in this image. It's called the mosquito fleet due to the insect-like profile of the small fishing and shrimping boats docked, according to an article from this year.

5. Church St / back from 19th St. A wide sidewalk and road take up a majority of this image of Church Street. The note to the mount verso says the image was taken at the intersection of Church and 19th, which means that Gothic building to the right could quite possibly be the First Presbyterian Church, which was built by 1872.
