A grouping of five (5) stereoviews of San Antonio, Texas, on yellow mounts, ca. 1870s. All feature the backmark of Henry A. Doerr (1822-85), a prolific photographer based in the Alamo City. Doerr, originally born in Prussia, arrived in San Antonio around 1865 and immediately began taking photographs, first with two different partners within a year of each other and then by himself around 1867. He continued to work alone and with others over the next 20 years until his passing, capturing both studio portraits and outdoor scenes, like these stereoviews.

Included are:

1. View of the C. Monod building. Consignor's notes locate it on Alamo Street, south of Crockett and across the Alamo Plaza from the Menger Hotel. Vance & Bro. — a business selling a range of items from dry goods and clothing to hardware and groceries — was located inside the buildings.

2. Misso. de San Juan. Title from period pencil inscription to verso.

Two men stand on a crumbling stone wall next to a thatched dwelling. Consignor's notes say this was at the Mission San Juan, a large church compound that became known for its agricultural successes in the 18th century.

3. Market St. from Main Plaza. Title from period ink inscription to verso.

An empty Market Street shot highlighting the dirt road in between commercial buildings.

4. View of people surrounding a body of water, which conveniently has a plank bridge for passersby to cross. Consignor's notes say this could very likely be San Pedro Springs, the oldest park in Texas and the second-oldest park in the country.

5. View of two women and a child on the porch of a large residential estate. This image is also featured as a CDV in another lot in this sale. Consignor's notes place this building next to the U.S. San Antonio Arsenal, which was used until 1949.

Very good condition overall, displaying strong tones and good clarity throughout the scenes. Light soiling to the edges of photographs and mounts but does not impact visibility.
