Full-length outdoor portrait of Elmer Freshour, albumen cabinet card. N.p., n.d. Period pencil identification to mount verso.

Freshour poses with a large bayonetted rifle before a large tent.

Elmer F. Freshour (1871-1939), corporal of the 51st regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry. According to the Adams County Free Press (9 June 1898), this infantry, in which Freshour is listed, departed from the state capital of Iowa to the Philippine Islands. Enlisting on 26 April 1898, Freshour mustered into Company K of the 51st Regiment. He mustered out on 2 November 1899 with the rest of the regiment. Upon his death, he was remembered as a veteran of the war, returning to Iowa to work as a janitor for the schools and churches of Corning, Iowa.

The 51st Regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry was raised for service in the Philippines theater of the Spanish-American War in 1898. Though the regiment would struggle with illness, losing a large number of its men through disease, the 51st would gain a positive reputation for its strength and presence throughout the duration of the War. A monument stands at its training camp, Camp Merritt, in San Francisco.

A fine Cabinet card representing a member of the well-reputed 51st Regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry.
