Spanish-American War era U.S. Navy sailors flat cap bearing a tally inscribed "U.S.S. Maine". The tally has lost much of its original gold coloring with age, yet the ship's name remains clearly discernible. A historic naval artifact directly associated with one of the significant vessels in American history. Diam. approx. 7 in.

The battleship "U.S.S. Maine" was sent to Havana Harbor in early 1898 amid rising tensions with Spain. Her catastrophic explosion on 15 February 1898, claimed 266 lives and gave rise to the rallying cry “Remember the Maine,” which galvanized American public opinion and became one of the most famous slogans in U.S. history.
