.43 Spanish. 32" barrel secured by two rounded, clamping barrel bands. SN: 41385. No finish remaining, steel mountings, smooth full-lenght walnut stock. James Paris Lee designed bolt action detachable magazine fed repeating rifle with military ladder rear sight, Barleycorn front sight and sling swivels on the upper band and on a lug forward of the magazine. Markings on top edge of the receiver are mostly missing due to a diagonal section of the upper receiver rail that has been machined away. Obverse side of bolt with some grinding and tool marks. Not considered safe to shoot until inspected by a gunsmith. No US military markings are present on the chamber or in the wood. No calbier marking is present, and .45-70 dummies do not fit the magazine or chamber. Bore is nominlly .43 so this is likely a Spanish contract rifle in .43 Spanish. Fair to Good. Bore about good, moderately oxidized with some pitting and visible rifling. No finish remaining on most of the gun which has the dull pewter appearance of a chemical cleaning. Some surface roughness and pinpricking are present as well as some lightly scattered pitting. Receiver with part of the upper left edge of the rail machined away, bolt with some tool and grinding marks. Mechanically functional action is rough and sticky and need some attention. Not considered safe to fire until inspected by a qualified gunsmith. Wood with moderate wear, showing scattered bumps, dings and mars.
