...she must be put in fear of some one, or we are all in danger of being burned up...

Autograph letter signed by N.H. Chaitt, to Worfield Simpson. N.p., 14 March 1843. 1 page, approx. 7 7/8 x 6 1/2 in. With integral address panel to verso of integral leaf.

An unusual and disturbing letter that appears to be a request to be allowed to chastise and physically punish an unnamed enslaved woman. The letter writer, begging secrecy, writes in full: "We wish you to give us something to show a piece of writing for her. we are [purposely?] are afraid. So Nathan said he will then take upon himself to correct her and not til thn or let us know Mikal you would take for her time, if you knew her as well as we do you would do anything to put her in her place, [illeg.] is no comparison to Miss Lim, she must be put in fear of some one, or we are all in danger of being burned up, Nathan wrote to you but we got no answer please to write to us. Do not let any one know that we wrote to you I would not have the Negroes to it for worth of them, let us know if she was mentioned in the emancipation of your [illeg] blacks I write to you by the request of N.H."
