.52 caliber smoothbore. 26" barrel secured by two flat, spring retained barrel bands. NSN. Heavily oxidized brown patina on metal, iron furniture with implement compartment in toe of stock, smooth walnut stock. Single shot percussion breechloading carbine with conventional Hall hook shaped breech lever, ramrod bayonet, fixed notch rear sight and Barleycorn front sight. Breech block marked in four lines "U.S /S. NORTH / MIDLTN / CONN" with no visible date below the other lines. A block "NWP" (Nahum W Patch) is stamped on the left of the breech and Patch's weak script "NWP" cartouche is visible at the left rear of the stock, behind the action. No cartouche is visible on the obverse.

6,135 of these .52 caliber Hall Carbines were produced by North circa 1836-1839 with most seeing Seminole War service, many with the 2nd US Dragoons. A well worn and salty example of the first US percussion breechloading carbine.

Good. Bore dark and heavily oxidized. Metal heavily oxidized as well with a dark brown patina and moderate amounts of scattered surface roughness and some even light pitting. Markings mostly visible with some very weak or gone. Mechanically functional action. Wood well worn, with slivered loss along the forend and numerous bumps, dings, marks, mars, scuffs and scrapes distributed over all of the wood.
