Single shot flintlock muzzloading smoothbore pistol wtih dished notch rear sight, brass blade front sight, sliding safety at rear of lock and a captive swivel ramrod. Lock marked  "S NORTH" in a downward arc over an {Eagle] flanked by a "U" and an "S" and "MIDLTN CONN." in an upward arc under the eagle. Bolted flint lock remains in orignal flint configuration with a detachable brass pan and rounded reinforced cock, Breech of barrel marked "RJ / P / US" and a legible script "ET" (Elisha Toby) cartouche is prsent on the counterpane. 

The US Model 1819 Pistol introduced two new featues to US martial pistols that had not prevoisuly been used. One was adopted in a number of subsequent pistol models and the other did not survive to see use in any additoinal pistols. The sucessful, but not horribly popular addition was the captive swivel ramrod which would see use until the end of the US military muzzleloading pistol era. The unsuccessful addition was the sliding safety on the rear of the lock that would not be used on later models. North produced a total of 20,400 of these pistols on contract for the US government between 1821 and 1824. The guns saw use during the Seminole and Mexican American Wars and some later saw use during the Civil War era altered to percussion. {ANTIQUE}

Good to Near Very Good. Bore dark and oxidized with some pitting. Metal with no brown remainign and showing moderate amounts of scattered surface oxidation, some surface roughness and some lightly scattered pitting. Markings in metal are moslty legible, but the top line of the lock mark is weak. Lock remains in original flint and is mechanically functional. Barrel remains in orignal flint as well, based upon endoscopic examination. Wood with moderate wear and some light sanding. The forend shows some chipped loss and wear along the upper edge with a long sliver running from the face of the barrel band to the stock tip missing on the reverse. Otherwise, the wood shows numerous scattered bumps, dings and mars.
