BEAUTIFUL 1876 CENTENNIAL FACSIMILE OF PAUL REVERE'S HISTORIC 1770 ENGRAVING OF BRITISH TROOPS LANDING IN BOSTON
after Paul Revere (1735-1818). A View of Part of the Town of Boston in New England And British Ships of War Landing Their Troops 1768. Facsimile engraving with hand coloring. Chicago, Illinois: Alfred L. Sewell, 1868. 17 7/8 x 12 in.
A fine Centennial-era print that exactingly reproduces Revere's original engraving, printed circa 1770. Revere depicts the British troops, immediately visible thanks to their red uniforms, disembarking on the Long Wharf. Boston Harbor is swarmed with meticulously rendered British warships waving the flags of empire.
Interestingly, the Sewell version omits the execution scene at the left edge of Revere's original. Sewall was best known as a publisher of works for children (as noted by the imprint, "publisher of 'The Little Corporal'") and edited the work slightly to make it more palatable to young audiences.
A very nice copy of the Centennial work.
