REVOLUTIONARY WAR-ERA RECEIPT SIGNED BY CONTINENTAL ARMY CAPTAIN

Autograph document signed by Capt. William Hillhouse. [South Carolina], 29 June 1780. 1 page, 8vo. Docketing to verso.

A Revolutionary War-era receipt signed by Capt. William Hillhouse. He writes that he received an order for £234 "to pay the bounty of those who inlist [sic] into the Cont'l Army for which Col. Jon Latimer is to account." Col. Latimer (1724-1806) is famously remembered for his role in the Battle of Saratoga, where he led a militia regiment to support Gen. Horatio Gates's forces. Perhaps these funds are meant for the men that enlisted in his regiment.

Hillhouse (1760-1848) of South Carolina entered the Revolutionary War as a volunteer in Col. Thomas Nell's regiment. He slowly rose through the ranks and participated in the Battles of Biggin Church, Williamson's Plantation, Rocky Mount and Hanging Rock, the latter of which Hillhouse's captain was wounded and unfit for service, leading Hillhouse to take command. As a captain, Hillhouse had a storied career: He participated in battles at Carey's Fort, Fishing Creek, Fort Granby, Big Savannah and Wright's Bluff. Not even a year after being appointed captain, Hillhouse resigned in April 1781.
