[REVOLUTIONARY WAR] 1780 NJ Courts Martial Document

Autograph court martial document signed by Stephen Fleming. West Colts Neck, [New Jersey], 31 August 1780. 1 page, 8 1/4 x 13 3/16 in. 

 

Titled "A Court Martial held by our government," the document lists multiple soldiers who were fined between 50 and 150 pounds. Signed on 12 February 1778 by Stephen Fleming of Monmouth County, New Jersey, who was a Captain in Walton's Company of New Jersey Militia. It is also listed in the History of Monmouth County that he was held as a prisoner of war sometime in 1780. Fleming signed the Articles of Retaliation in June 1779 and makes appearances in other New Jersey petitions and court documents from 1779 to 1783.
