REVOLUTIONARY WAR AUTOGRAPH DOCUMENT
Autograph document signed by Capt. Jacob Colson, 8th Company, 1st Georgia Battalion. Georgia, 23 September 1776. 1 page, approx. 4 1/2 x 2 7/8 in.
A note from Capt. Jacob Colson letting the receiver know that him "and one privet [sic] Crossed at Skidway Ferrey [sic]." It's unclear which direction they were going once they crossed Skidaway River, but regardless the duo was still in Georgia.
Colson (ca. 1740-1778) was the captain of the 1st Georgia Battalion's Rifle Company. Organized in 1776, Colson's company comprised of two lieutenants, two sergeants, one drummer and 10 sentinels (Knight, 14). Colson would have participated in the Southern Theater as part of the 1st Georgia Battalion; however, since records show he died around 1778, it's unclear if this was due to action in the Southern Theater or something else. His death could have been a result of the Third Expedition of Florida or the capture of Savannah at the end of 1778.
A Revolutionary War-era document with the potential for further research.
