Powder horn. Norristown, PA: 1779. Inscribed as follows: "C. Z. Weiser / 36 Regt of Pa. / Melita - 1779 / Norristown," along with depictions of buildings and a bird perched above the body of the text. Approx. 5 in. long.
Prior to 1784, when Montgomery County was founded and Norristown named its seat, Norristown fell within the bounds of Philadelphia County. Several of the county's militia regiments fought alongside the Continental army during the American Revolution, though a 36th regiment is not recorded as being mustered into service. No further information is known regarding C. Z. Weiser, the militiaman for or by whom this horn was engraved.
A fine militia accouterment from the midst of the Revolutionary War that deserves further research.
