Ottomar Anton (1895-1976), designer
Buch und Schwert [Book and Sword]
Offset lithograph
Leipzig, Germany
Ernst Hedrich Nachf.; Verlag des Börsenvereins der Deutschen Buchhändler du Leipzig
[circa 1942]
Approx. 23 5/16 x 33 1/8 inches.
Designed by German artist Ottomar Anton, who in addition to designing many posters during the Nazi regime, was also a member of the Waffen-SS. The Iron Cross serves as a backdrop to a vermilion book bearing a swastika and a golden gladius sword. The work was published by the German Publishers and Booksellers Association of Leipzig, possibly for one of the annual "Week of the German Book" celebrations. The propaganda event promoted state-approved literature and authors aligned with the regime.
